sawedoffdisclosure:

I think this is the third year I’ve made one of these. For what it’s worth, I enjoy putting the year in perspective, and giving what little recognition I can to some great and talented artists. If you haven’t, I strongly urge you to give these artists a listen. I think you’ll enjoy them!

A little something different from my mix CD posting…
My boyfriend and I went to half-priced books with a game in mind…
Pick a clearance CD based on completely arbitrary aspects. Cool art work, neat sounding-track titles, hilarious band name etc. The only rule was you could NOT know the band already.
So he and I picked, respectively “The Ocean Band” - Couch Dictators and “Blazing Rains”.
We gave them both a listen…
Jennell: Blazing Rains was a super low-fi endeavorer make by a single man with a single guitar who may or may not have been single. I digress, the album, despite being technically quite awful, was actually inexplicably charming. It reminded me of a less talented, less tortured, Daniel Johnston. The album also had wonderful screenprinted cover art, and pretty in depth liner notes. Overall- GOOD CHOICE BY ME
Rusty: I picked this CD called “Couch Dictators” by a Singapore band called The Ocean Band. I saw the art; pretty low-brow, if you ask me. I wasn’t sure what to think of it, being my first “cold” pick.
Well when we put it in, we were blasted with piercing horns, wah-pedals and a bassist who has a serious boner for Victor Wooten. The vocalist was very clear and in-tune… he actually sounded good. The band, all clearly talented guys, wrote songs that *could* be kind to the ears, but it is just too much. Like… damn. They sound like they are trying to upstage Eddie Butts at the Harley-Davidson Stage at 1pm at Summerfest. I was waiting for their rendition of “Mustang Sally,” and to be honest, I’m kind of surprised I didn’t hear it.Wait, did I mention they’re from Singapore?
